The race to replace ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize as the ANC chairman in KwaZulu-Natal is heating up with the Moses Mabhida Region yesterday announcing its preferred candidate.

Regional chairman Alpha Shelembe said that all chairmen and secretaries of 84 branches had unanimously agreed that KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Senzo Mchunu should lead the party in the province.

Mchunu will be challenged for the post by current deputy chairman and transport MEC Willies Mchunu. The ANC Youth League in the province prefers him as a candidate chairman.

The league's provincial task team convener, Vukani Ndlovu, said it would finalise its position at the weekend.

"Our regions are busy discussing the issue. We will be at the forefront in calling for Willies to take over the position. We believe that, as a senior cadre, he is mature and can play the role of a father figure for the ANC Youth League.

"There was trust involved in voting Willies into the position he holds now. That trust has not deteriorated in the past few months. Pushing him up can minimise contestation and we can have Senzo as his deputy," Ndlovu said.

The provincial general council meeting to elect the new chairman will be held from March 8 at a venue still to be confirmed.
