HEALTH BRIEFS: 11 February 2013

Staff reporters | 11 February, 2013 00:07

ONE THING FOR YOUR HEALTH

DO more strength training, say Harvard University experts. Exercise using weight machines, resistance bands and free weights not only builds stronger muscles, but also stronger bones, preventing osteoporosis in the long run.

NUTRITION BITE

Diet sodas may be worse for you than regular sodas. In a new study, France's National Institute of Health and Medical Research found that the "light" sodas, containing artificial sweeteners, spiked the risk of type 2 diabetes.

BREAKTHROUGH OF THE WEEK

New evidence suggests that red wine and green tea can fight off Alzheimer's disease. Leeds University researchers found natural chemicals - green tea's EGCG and red wine's resveratrol - stop harmful proteins from latching onto brain cells, a key step in the disease's pathway.

MOST BIZARRE

Reading "chick lit" can make you feel fat. Virginia Tech researchers found slim protagonists made readers feel fat, while protagonists who had low self-esteem made readers worry about their bodies.
