A senior North West ANC Youth League leader has been arrested in connection with the murder of slain Dr Kenneth Kaunda regional secretary Obuti Chika.

The politician - whose name is known but cannot yet be revealed - is to appear in Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court this week with three other suspects to face a charge of conspiracy to murder.

North West police spokesman Brigadier Thulani Ngubane confirmed the man's arrest on Friday night.

"Four people have been arrested so far and are still charged with conspiracy to murder and not a direct charge of murder," Ngubane said yesterday.

"Three suspects are expected to appear in court [today] and the last suspect, who was arrested long ago, will appear on Tuesday [tomorrow]."

Ngubane said the suspects "may or may not" belong to a political party, but provincial youth league spokesman Jerry Matebesi confirmed that the suspect arrested on Friday was a youth league leader.

Chika was shot dead outside his home in Alabama, Klerksdorp, on December 14 - two days before the start of the ANC's elective conference in Bloemfontein, Free State.

He died from a bullet wound to the stomach.

Police said at the time that Chika, 33, stopped his vehicle at the gate during the early hours and told his wife not to leave the house because someone had been seen outside.

He went to investigate but was instead shot. Chika died on arrival at Klerksdorp Hospital.

In September KwaZulu-Natal youth league leader Sifiso Khumalo was jailed for 22 years for the murders of Bheki Chiliza and Dumisani Malunga, the Oshabeni branch secretary and chairman.
