Britain's Prince Harry last night attended a fundraising dinner at Summer Place, a lavish venue in the heart of Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Wearing a slinky, bare-backed, Gavin Rajah gown, the MC for the night, Bonang Matheba, said the dinner marked the launch of the Mamohato programme, named after the late mother of Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso.

The goal of the programme is to build the first permanent centre in Lesotho for children and young people living with HIV.

Cyril Ramaphosa and Patrice Motsepe were among the guests, as were Top Billing presenter Lorna Maseko and actress Terry Pheto.

Vicky Crease's catering firm created the menu.

''I was so thrilled when I learned that I would be preparing the food for the event. I was bursting to tell but I couldn't share it with anyone because of confidentiality agreements," said Crease.

For the main course, guests could choose between rack of free-range Karoo lamb, or Venetian artichoke and asparagus risotto.

''I wanted an influence of Africa to linger on the taste buds," said Crease.

Said Matheba : ''I've never met an English royal before but Prince Harry is very down-to-earth and relaxed - not how I imagine the rest of the family to be."

The 28-year-old prince spent the day yesterday with Prince Seeiso, with whom he founded Sentebale, meaning ''forget me not" in Sotho, in memory of their late mothers, in 2006.

The prince also visited StBernadette's Resource Centre for the Blind, in Maseru, and the Reitumetse Church Project, which cares for orphans and children with disabilities.

UK newspapers are reporting that Prince Harry will not stay in South Africa to accompany his friend Cressida Bonas to the wedding of her sister, Isabella, to Sir Richard Branson's son, Sam.
