Fanie Fourie's Lobola won the audience choice award for best comedy at the 19th annual Sedona International Film Festival, in Arizona.

"Audience awards are among the best harbingers of a film's success because they are decided by regular cinemagoers," the film's director, Henk Pretorius, said yesterday.

About 145 films were screened at this year's festival, which screens features, shorts, documentaries, animations, and foreign films.

The producers of Fanie Fourie's Lobola, Lance Samuels and Kweku Mandela, said: "To win the award against the level of competition at Sedona is a huge accolade.

"This is a highly regarded festival and the audience award is widely recognised as one of the most important of those at any festival," they said.

This was the second audience award the film has won. It took the Jozi Film Festival audience award last month.

In the film an Afrikaans man and a Zulu woman fall in love and have to navigate their way through the complicated process of paying lobola.

The film is on circuit in South Africa.
