The Bloemfontein teacher accused of referring to black pupils as "k****rs" has been suspended.

The allegation against the teacher, at Wilgehof Primary School, was made by Craig Thiem, the father of two children, aged 12 and 13, who are the only white pupils at the school.

He complained to the Free State department of education and to the SA Human Rights Commission.

Thiem's son and daughter had told him of their teacher's behaviour and said that the old South African flag was displayed above his classroom chalkboard.

When he went to the school to investigate, Thiem came across a poster showing six baboons with a caption suggesting similarities between them and expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.

Free State education's Howard Ndaba confirmed the teacher's suspension yesterday.

"O fficials on Monday ordered that the flag and poster be taken down during their surprise visit to the school," he said.

Ndaba said the principal would continue to carry out his duties unless the investigation determined culpability.

Human Rights Commission s pokesman Isaac Mangena said the commission was happy with the way the matter was being handled.
