A 26-year-old lesbian was found dead with a toilet brush lodged in her vagina after yet another homophobic attack yesterday morning in Thokoza, east of Johannesburg.

"The woman was last seen at a local shebeen and we are awaiting the results of a postmortem to determine whether she had been raped," said Captain Godfrey Maditsi from Thokoza police station.

The Times last week reported on an Amnesty International research that showed black lesbians were the most at risk of homophobic violence.

"There is a level of acceptance for violence against people who are thought of as different or unconventional. Unfortunately many people see being lesbian as un-African," Mbuyiselo Botha of Sonke Gender Justice, a civil rights NGO, said yesterday.

Maditsi urged the public to come forward with any information that might assist police in their investigation .

On Wednesday last week, The Times reported on the case of a 17-year-old lesbian who was raped three times.

She allegedly killed the last man who raped her and was facing a charge of murder.

In another incident, a 23-year-old Cape Town man, Lunga Voko, was attacked and part of his left ear was shot off at a petrol station near his home on Easter Sunday.

His assailants were a group of men who questioned his sexuality because he was wearing tight shorts.
