The SA Municipal Workers' Union has drawn first blood in its long-running campaign against Metrobus acting managing director Lawrence Maqekoane.

Last week, the bus company's management acceded to Samwu's demand for an independent investigation into allegations of corruption and widespread abuse.

Samwu drivers went on strike last week demanding that Maqekoane step aside while the company investigated the union's allegations of corruption against him. But Metrobus's board rejected Samwu's demand, arguing that its claims were unsubstantiated.

The impasse led to last week's strike, which hampered the bus company's operations.

But the parties have since reached an agreement that would see the appointment of a "professional" to establish the veracity of Samwu's claims. The agreement paved the way for Metrobus drivers to return to work on Saturday.

Metrobus general manager of human resources, Ranti Mahlabana, confirmed the agreement.

He said Maqekoane would remain in his position in the interim. .

Samwu and Metrobus will today approach the Labour Court to make their agreement an order of the court.

Pikitup workers who went on an illegal strike recently will face disciplinary charges.

Pikitup spokesman Desiree Ntshingila yesterday confirmed that notices of suspension had been served on 1 799 employees.

She said they would appear before the company's disciplinary committee "this week".

However, disciplinary proceedings were only a formality and the workers would be allowed to return to work, Ntshingila said.
