The continent's top tourism app was announced in Cape Town yesterday. Africa Live, designed by Johannesburg-based company Statpack Travel, won the Africa Quest trophy at the eTourism Africa summit.

The app allows tourists to share their sightings of wildlife immediately.

More than 70 entries from across Africa were received but Satpack Travel walked away with $10000 in cash.

William Price, South African Tourism's global marketing manager, said it was tough choosing between the finalists.

"There were only three slots but we had a tie for third place, so it was ideal to see four strong, dynamic apps showcased to our audience for the final judging.

"The audience made its decision and we congratulate the Africa Live team for its app," said Price.

The three finalists were Activity Bridge, a web-based platform to sell tourism activities; Tourism Radio, a device that combines GPS and location-based information for self-drive holidays; and Pixshare Africa, a photo-sharing social media platform for travel businesses.

"We saw a strong need in the marketplace for a platform for people to share their wildlife sightings instantly," said Rob Maclean, Satpack Travel's managing director.

"We are thrilled to have won."
