A team of sleep analysts in Switzerland has proved that when the moon is full people take longer to fall asleep and then wake up earlier, reporting less satisfactory sleep.
This may not surprise you. It certainly didn't surprise me. That's just one of the many effects we expect from a full moon, isn't it? What did surprise me was that this is the first such scientific announcement I've heard in decades. Academics are usually so prejudiced they won't even test astrology properly. Wait till I tell you tomorrow about the exceptional circumstances that led them to this discovery.
LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)
We are always being urged to keep an open mind. Yet once you start questioning any key factor in your life, you effectively grab hold of a loose thread in the fabric of your reality. Tug it long and hard enough and it may yet cause almost everything to unravel. Something, though, is causing you to doubt an important arrangement on the home or family front. You would far prefer to have everything settled. But this can't happen until you thoroughly check a dodgy assumption. Ask brave questions.
SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)
Nothing stays the same forever. Everything is in a state of perpetual flux. There may be limits past which fortunes seemingly cannot rise - but if so, there are barriers below which they cannot fall. If we are on a high, we can rest assured that something sooner or later will knock us off our perch. If we are at a low ebb, we know that it is only a matter of time before we rise up again. You are on an up now. How much further you can rise largely depends on how bravely you are willing to reach out.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21)
Sometimes, you see books with preposterous names like "Great Mysteries Solved at Last" or "All You Ever Want to Know About the Unknown". The contents never quite live up to the titles. How can they? Solved mysteries aren't mysterious. Genuine unknowns are not knowable. Mysterious, unknown things, though, intrigue us. So much so that we don't really want them explained. We just want to keep hearing about them. Soon, you get to make sense of something that seemingly makes no sense.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20)
We puff out our chests and flex our muscles. We stiffen our shoulders and straighten our backs. We knit our brows and purse our lips. We prepare for trouble and tension yet, like the Grand Old Duke of York, we spend far more time marshalling our troops than we ever spend engaging in battle. Up to the top of the hill and back down again. Always expecting the worst. Never quite encountering it. You are now feeling guarded yet you are about to see a reason to celebrate. Don't be defensive. Try to relax.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)
Are you not sure that you like where you are being taken. Or what you are being taken through? Then what are you going to do about this? It may seem as if there's little you can exert by way of power and influence. You can talk. You may even be listened to. You can act. Your deeds may even provoke a response. But you fear that there's a conveyor belt trundling along and you are on it. It is not going to deliver you helplessly into the jaws of some monster. It's taking you to the chance to choose a change.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20)
We expect the road outside our door to lead to the same destination that it has always done. We know where the shops are. We know where our relatives live. If, one day, we were to wake up and find that we had travelled 100 years backwards or forwards in time, we would feel isolated and disorientated. Likewise, if our house mysteriously moved to a different location overnight. What was once a fixed point of reference is now a floating point. Just make your inner compass straight and true.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20)
Which team is the best? The one that you support, of course. Loyalty and subjectivity are like heat and cold. Get too much of one and the other disappears. That's right and natural, it is nothing to worry about or apologise for. But, in much the same way as we can tire of any particular temperature extreme, we need to expose ourselves to alternate viewpoints, even when we are happy with the ones we hold most of the time. You are now gaining a valuable insight. It doesn't change everything, but it does change something.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21)
How hard does life need to be? How much must you suffer and struggle? Don't feel obliged to answer. Don't feel obliged either to give yourself a hard time. And if someone else is giving you that hard time, don't feel obliged to accept it. Consciously or unconsciously we trip each other up. We put spokes of doubt in the wheels of our own progress and then project our negativity onto others. What can stop this? A relentless commitment to positivity and kindness. That's all you need.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 22)
Picture a kind of military briefing room. Mischievous spirits are gathered. In walks the chief imp. "Okay everyone, here's the mission. Go find as many Geminis as you can. Annoy them intensely. Make them false promises. Get halfway through jobs and abandon them. Say one thing while you do another." After the pep talk, the squadron sets out. You can be forgiven for feeling that just such a targeted initiative has been set in motion lately. It is as if certain people are fishing for ways to worry you. Don't give them the satisfaction.
CANCER (June 23 - July 23)
You may be ready but someone else is not. You may be clear but another person is confused. There's no way round this for the time being. You have to go at their pace. You have to take their doubts seriously and you have to wait until the engine of their enthusiasm is running at the same speed as your own. That's frustrating but it's not bad news. You can't now achieve on your own what you want to achieve. Either you do it as part of a team or you don't do it at all. Be patient. The co-operation you require will come.
LEO (July 24 - August 23)
Is the secret formula buried in a vault or locked in a safe? Is it endlessly complicated? Must you study for a lifetime before you can understand it - or even before you can find it? Are you dealing with something incredibly difficult, mind-bogglingly intricate, scarily delicate or worryingly unstable? It may seem so. Indeed, on some levels and in some ways, it may even be true. But, in essence, at least, life is none of those things. It is simply a gift to be enjoyed and soon you will see proof that this is a generous cosmos.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 23)
Socrates, the great Greek scholar, said: "Know thyself." The ancient Chinese sage, Sun Tzu, said: "Know your enemy." Can both of these philosophers be correct? Of course. Why, they may even be talking about one and the same person. We can all be our own worst enemy at times. Usually, this comes about when we think that we know ourselves too well. Actually, none of us knows ourselves anywhere near enough. You will learn a lot over the next few days about what a friend to yourself you can be.
