Award-winning South African actress Joan Brickhill died in a frail care facility in Johannesburg yesterday.

Born in Durban in 1924, she appeared on stage just two years later and went on to become one of the leading performers, directors and producers of her time.

She received national attention for more than a decade as the star of a series of "Minstrel" and "Follies" extravaganzas. She also had great success as Miss Hannigan in Annie.

She married Louis Burke with whom she formed the Brickhill-Burke Company, which produced and directed many musicals and plays, and fought to save His Majesty's Theatre in Johannesburg.

They later divorced and Brickhill returned to Durban, where she taught and directed productions.
