The ANC appears to be controlling what songs are sung at ANC rallies by blaring out a prepared set list from a booming sound system.

At the provincial launch of the ANC manifesto at the Lucas Moripe Stadium near Pretoria yesterday, many members sang outside the venue. It would appear the ANC wants to prevent the singing of songs meant to embarrass certain leaders.

ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa told the rally that members should ensure that Gauteng remains under the party's control. He pointed to a "vote ANC" sign on one of the hills surrounding the stadium.

"Gauteng belongs to the ANC, as you can see by the writing on the mountain.

"I do not know who wrote that, it could be God or our gods, but as you know in our culture mountains do not lie," he said.

Ramaphosa received one of the biggest cheers at the event when he told ANC supporters that the party would strive for a corruption-free society.

"Those who steal people's money must go to jail. We are determined to deal with corruption; those among us who are found to have acted inappropriately will be asked to resign," he said.
