Egypt's top Islamic body said yesterday the big budget Hollywood biblical epic Noah was irreligious and should not be screened in the country.

The Al-Azhar institute, an influential Sunni Muslim authority, said the movie, due in Egypt on March 26, violates Islam by portraying a prophet. The film has already angered Christian bodies in the US, with Russell Crowe's reportedly unconventional portrayal of Noah.

Portraying a prophet "contradicts the stature of prophets and messengers and antagonises the faithful", Al-Azhar said.

Egypt censored the blockbuster The Da Vinci Code after protests from the Orthodox Coptic Church. But it allowed Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ , which depicts Jesus's crucifixion. Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet and was not crucified.
