The 20th annual SA Music Awards will honour Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Phuzekhemisi with lifetime achievement awards, it was announced yesterday.

Both were hailed for their efforts to "raise the global profile of isicathamiya and maskandi".

Mambazo are fresh from winning their fourth Grammy in January for best world music for their live album Singing for Peace Around the World.

The awards will be handed out during the live ceremony on April28 at the Sun City Superbowl.

Phuzekhemisi, real name Johnstone Mnyandu, said: "I'm grateful to those who still recognise my music - may they also recognise that of other artists who have worked so hard."

Phuzekhemisi is also nominated in the best maskandi album category for his album Kungakho Nilwa Nodwa.

With an amazing 54 years in the industry, Ladysmith Black Mambazo do not show any signs of slowing down. Their musical, Amambazo will debut at Pretoria's State Theatre on Thursday.

They will perform at the Edinburgh International Festival and premiere a Zulu ballet, Inala, which celebrates South Africa's 20 years of democracy.
