Mpumalanga plans to save millions of rands by training its traffic officers inside the province.

MEC for safety and security Vusi Shongwe has unveiled plans to build a new traffic-officer training college in Bushbuckridge.

He said Mpumalanga had spent close to R6-million in the current financial year to send officers to colleges for training in Gauteng, Free State and Limpopo.

The new college will train new recruits and officers already employed in 21 municipalities.

"The college will also be used to reskill officers. Every traffic officer has to undergo training at least twice a year for firearm handling, defensive driving and street survival techniques," said Shongwe.

He said a total of 100 officers graduated last week and have been deployed in the province.

"With the addition of the newly recruited officers the department has now 745 traffic officers," the MEC said.
