A prisoner broke out of jail to escape the sound of rap music that was played incessantly in his wing, a court heard.

Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported on its website yesterday that Robert Stevens, 58, who had been serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence for robbery, made his dash for freedom from HMP Leyhill minimum security prison in Gloucestershire.

Stevens was rearrested 20 days later.

In his plea explanation, his lawyer said Stevens ''was in a very noisy wing where rap music was being played day and night. He was also being constantly pestered by younger cellmates to purchase drugs.''
