Olympic track star Caster Semenya has denied rumours of an "impending" marriage to fellow runner Violet Raseboya.

The speculation led to a flurry of tweets, with some people showing more ignorance than wit.

"So Caster is a man?' was a common tweet.

Semenya told the Sowetan : "There is no wedding. Don't believe the rumours.

"Right now I am very focused on my studies and athletics; there is nothing else going on."

The Commonwealth Games start in Glasgow, Scotland, in July.

Reports suggested that Semenya's family had offered lobolo of R25000 to Raseboya's parents for Violet's hand in marriage.

One Twitter user (@molotoramahuma) posted: "So Caster Semenya paid lobolo? She makes me feel less of a man. #damn!!!"

Another user, @phousta, said: "First it was Caster Semenya paying lobolo for a woman and now it's Vuso Nova marrying another man!"

In March last year Drum magazine ran a cover story claiming that Semenya and Raseboya had moved in together, drove matching cars and wore matching clothes.

The magazine quoted a source as saying: "Caster is not dating a Bafana Bafana player, neither is she pregnant - that would be ridiculous. She's with Violet."

In a previous issue, Drum gave Semenya a makeover and she appeared on the cover wearing nail polish, a dress and curly hair, amid speculation that she was genetically more male than female.
