Three SAPS members from the Central Firearm Registry in Pretoria are to appear in a Cape Town court today - alongside a suspected 26s gang leader - for the fraudulent issue of firearm licences.

The four are suspected of being part of a syndicate that operates in at least two provinces.

Two other Cape Town residents have been arrested and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said yesterday that more arrests were expected

National police spokesman General Solomon Makgale said the alleged fraud incorporated the " initial application, the firearm training facility involved, the Olifantsfontein police station in Midrand, Gauteng, where the applications are lodged and the SAPS Central Firearm Registry in Pretoria, where the applications are approved".

He said the Pretoria offices of the Central Firearm Registry had been raided and documents and electronic equipment seized.

Phiyega said she was concerned about police members' involvement in criminal activities.

She said the arrests of the three police officers followed an ongoing investigation that had resulted in a number of cops being internally charged and a brigadier in the Central Firearm Registry being dismissed.
