State Security Minister David Mahlobo has rejected calls by the DA for increased civilian oversight of his spies, saying the current law governing the intelligence community was sufficient to protect citizens against abuses.

Mahlobo said he had held a meeting with inspector-general of intelligence Faith Radebe during which complaints about his spies were discussed.

"At this stage I'm dealing with them, but have not finalised reading those reports. I'm still taking briefings from everybody associated," said Mahlobo.

The DA's Dirk Stubbe said stricter oversight over the country's spies was needed to prevent them from being abused by factions inside the governing ANC.

"It's important for us to continually reassess our role of oversight over intelligence services," said Stubbe.

The DA would soon introduce a private member's bill that would propose improved checks to counter the abuse of the country's intelligence services, Stubbe said.
