Australian police officers who handcuffed singer Lily Allen when she asked them to do so for a photo opportunity are being investigated for "breaching protocol".

The British singer tweeted the photograph to almost 5 million followers on Sunday, with the caption #uhoh. She also posted the photograph on Instagram, where it received almost 8000 likes, but it has since been removed.

The Australian Federal Police said the officers were "caught up in the moment" while escorting Allen as she was mobbed by fans while transiting through the airport at the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane.

"This matter is now subject to internal processes," the police said.
