Security will be tightened for the judge presiding over Radovan Krejcir's criminal trial following a suspected drive-by shooting on Monday night.

Judge Colin Lamont was not injured in the incident. But, in the Johannesburg High Court yesterday, he raised concerns about his "personal security" following "an incident" that either constituted "a serious attack" on him or was "an accident".

He did not provide details.

Police spokesman Solomon Makgale confirmed that while driving home Lamont had "heard a loud bang and saw that his windscreen had a slight crack".

"Given the matter he is presiding over, we have decided to up his personal security while we are investigating what exactly could have caused the windscreen of his car to crack," Makgale said.

Krejcir and his co-accused - Desai Lupondo, taxi boss Siboniso Miya and Hawks warrant officers Samuel "Saddam" Maruping, Jeff Nthoroane and Jan Mofokeng - have pleaded not guilty to charges of drug-dealing, kidnapping and attempted murder. The trial continues tomorrow.
