Johannesburg may be dubbed ''one of the most beautiful cities in the world" but it is also the most unfriendly, according to readers of an international travel magazine.

The City of Gold beat all others for unfriendliness in the newly published Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Survey, while Cape Town placed eighth on the list of the most friendly.

One reader warned: "It is not safe to travel in Johannesburg independently." Others called it "dangerous" and "a city of crime and contrasts". In one instance, a visitor was "pressured to give a tip for personal service, which was not received".

Despite its iffy reputation, Jozi is a burgeoning cultural capital, with a stunning urban landscape, "excellent breweries" and "great shopping".

The most friendly cities were Auckland in New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia.

Other unfriendly cities were Beijing, Frankfurt and Monte Carlo.
