The older you are, the more you enjoy sex.
The results of a study released yesterday, found that nearly half of South African women experience orgasm during sex but about a quarter rarely or never climax.
Many women have sex once or twice a week (28%), but most (32%) of the respondents said they had sex less often.
Forty-three percent of the women who reached orgasm regularly revealed that it was better during sex with a partner, whereas 28% said masturbation was better.
The Columinate and Durex women's sexual wellbeing survey found that 44% of women who were not satisfied with their sex life also had "worryingly" low self-esteem.
Women with high self-esteem (72%) were more satisfied with their sex life than their counterparts with low self-esteem, who did not feel attractive or were unhappy with their body image.
According to the study, the frequency of sex decreases with age but the quality seems to increase. More than half (52%) of women older than 40 regularly reach climax, compared with 40% of their younger counterparts.
Columinate founder and marketing director Elna Smit said the study showed that South Africans were "more talk and less walk".
"It seems South African women are in agreement with the ideals of how women should be able to express their sexuality" but their lives do not mirror those ideals, said Smit.
A little over 60% felt they could not live out their sexuality without risk of adverse judgment, alienation, or sexual violence.
The favoured activities for spicing up sex, the survey found, were oral sex and massages, and wearing sexy underwear.
Cellphones also do the job - 37% of women indulge in sexting (sex texting) and 23% admitted to having phone sex.
Sexologist Catriona Boffard said South African women were still conservative when it came to sex.
"A lot of women don't know that it's not okay to not have an orgasm. Life is too short to have boring sex."
