Gordon Igesund is expected to return to football management today by signing a contract with Supersport United and could start work as early as tomorrow as he returns to the Premier Soccer League for the first time since taking Moroka Swallows to second place in 2012, club sources said yesterday.

It is perfect timing for the 58-year-old, who completed his South African Football Association contract on Friday, and has long been the preferred candidate to take over from Cavin Johnson, whose dismissal last Thursday had been widely anticipated.

Igesund, who recently completed a two-year stint as national team coach, had patiently stuck out the terms of his Safa deal, making sure he went to work every day to avoid losing out on his last months of salary, even though he has had nothing to do since Bafana Bafana's May tour of Australia and New Zealand

But now, instead of sitting in an office reading the newspaper all day, Igesund will return to the pitch, where he has won league championships with four different clubs in a coaching career stretching back almost 30 years.

He will find a Supersport side in dire need of improved fitness, as admitted by their caretaker coach Kaitano Tembo in a not-too-subtle dig at Johnson's training methods after Saturday night's 2-0 defeat by leaders Kaizer Chiefs, which made it four defeats in five games.

If Igesund signs, as expected, he has a fortnight to work with his new charges before Supersport's next league outing, at home in Atteridgeville against Platinum Stars on September 13.

He will in all likelihood get a much warmer welcome at the club than he did a farewell at Safa House on Friday.

Safa president Danny Jordaan is said to have invited Igesund and his technical team to a farewell meal and then failed to pitch.
