Shorts, shades and tank tops are the order of the day now that the cold, grey season is over and spring has been bypassed with temperatures already reaching mid summer levels.

To spice up our summer staples, this season designers are tapping into the holographic zone, and the trend is everything glossy and shiny.

Back-to-the-future holographic and metallic fabrics are no longer confined to the runway. They are the must-have items in your closet this season.

Even though the holographic trend has an ultra-modern, futuristic and fashion-forward aesthetic, it is an easy trend to pull off. Shoes, like this season's favourite, the brogue, bags and skirts, bring disco-flavoured excitement to our sunny days.

Even shimmering metallic platforms have transformed from their status as the ugly duckling shoes of the 1960s to sought-after fashion fixes.

Pull off the holographic trend by pairing with neutral colours like black and white. Get a futuristic look by teaming high-sheen fabrics with simple leggings or jeans. Keep everything else to a bare minimum, including make-up and accessories.

It is a great way to add punch to things you already own, and can take your outfit from day to night. Wear a metallic dress for effect, but to prevent getting the Tin Man look, keep metallic pieces simple and understated.
