The rain gods are expected to bring relief to parts of South Africa following a hot introduction to spring.

But not just yet.

The warm conditions of the past few days will prevail over the next two days, SA Weather Service forecaster Edwin Thema said.

"However, mid-level moisture coming from the northwest will see thundershowers move into Northern Cape, and right into Eastern Cape on Sunday," he said.

Though the country can expect to be back to fine conditions on Monday, thundershowers are expected in KwaZulu-Natal by Wednesday.

Thema said temperatures will come down after it starts raining - but until then things are likely to be warm to hot.

He explained: "No rain means it is going to be hot because there is no moisture cooling the ground."

Long-term forecasts by the SA Weather Service suggest that rainfall is largely uncertain for most of South Africa for the months of spring and below-normal conditions for rainfall can be expected in summer.
