A man injured during a fatal shooting at a block of flats in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, has pleaded for tighter gun control.

The 28-year-old, who asked not to be named, had just arrived home from work on Saturday evening when he was shot at at the entrance of the flats.

The gunman, who is on the run, opened fire on residents and people who had arrived at the block for a party.

A woman, apparently the gunman's girlfriend, was killed.

Residents believe the killer came looking for his girlfriend at the party at her friend's flat.

The man said: "He found her enjoying herself with her friends and did not like that."

"It can't be OK that we live in a society where a person can shoot at people, kill one, run away and not be punished," said the injured man.

"The government and the police need to do something about gun control or more of us are going to keep on dying like our lives mean nothing," he said.

Two other men and three children - aged seven, eight and 10 - who were playing in a corridor, were shot. One of the children was critically injured.

A relative of one of the children said they were still shaken. The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "We can't believe this happened."

Police spokesman Captain Doniah Mothutsane appealed for any information on the gunman's whereabouts.
