Similar to the good ol' Powerpuff Girls, viewers can spend an episode a week in the lives of members of Night Guard Security - crime-fighters in Johannesburg.

Petrified residents of the northern suburbs of the city of gold can rest assured that Moolie "The Giant", JP "The Boss", Zaine "The Train", Trevor "The Cowboy" and Klaus "The Tech", are at their beck and call - camera in tow.

Brothers Moolie, Zaine and JP Eblen run the family company. The reaction unit has been active since 1976 and now there is a reality TV show of the same name on DStv's Fox Crime channel.

When a landlady suspects her tenant of dealing in drugs, she calls JP and his team.

Sometimes they spend long nights just watching and assessing "would-be suspects" outside petrol stations in Fourways.

Said one: "It's very boring sitting in a car waiting for something to happen, walking to get coffee, trying to stay awake in the car, playing on WhatsApp, and checking your Facebook. You've constantly got to be awake, that's why I always get a strong cup of coffee," says JP.

When they get a call about a man in a black Golf GTI who has stolen laptops and other devices, an exhilarating car chase ensues and then suddenly they call the chase off.

"At this point in time, I'm really pissed off," says JP to the camera.

"But we'll get him next time; it's just not worth it.

"We're not going to risk innocent people's lives and catch a suspect that stole a few laptops or whatever it may be. It's just not worth it."

And what would it be without tons of testosterone? Once when the team spends a day playing obstacle course games, Trevor loses a challenge and has to be tasered topless.

  • Night Guard airs on Tuesdays at 8.30pm on DStv's Fox Crime.
