With the weather heating up, it's time to whip out the sandals and get those nails in order.

Colours

Traditional brights are being toned down a notch this summer. Pastels plus salamander orange and aureolin (cobalt yellow) are the hot colours this season, and white makes a comeback as a base colour.

Shapes

Stiletto, ballerina and almond-shaped nails are in. Ballerina nails describe a flat tip shape that rounds at the edges. The stiletto is a sharp and pointy nail shape that requires TLC.

Nail art

Some think elaborate designs on nails is déclassé, but thousands of bloggers and vloggers disagree.

Three of the most popular nail art trends this summer are watermarble nails, gradient nails and floral-printed nails.

Nail it yourself

DIY has become one of the biggest nail trends this year with people opting to paint their nails themselves instead of going through the schlep of a nail appointment - not to mention paying for it.

Many Instagram and YouTube accounts have been dedicated to helping DIYers with step-by-step instructions for fabulous looks.
