Sandro Miller, a US photographer renowned for his expressive portraits and his advertising campaigns, first met John Malkovich at a Steppenwolf theatre gig roughly a dozen years ago - and found in the veteran actor not only a keen collaborator but a muse.

Miller is now putting on an exhibition called Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters .

As the title hints, Miller roped in Malkovich to help. The star of Being John Malkovich pretends to be everyone but himself, recreating some of the most iconic photos in history - from Che Guevara in his beret and Hitchcock strangling a goose to Robert Mapplethorpe's self-portrait with a gun and Annie Leibovitz's image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Said one Twitter user of the photos: "It can't be unseen - it is easily the funniest thing you will see this month. Funnier than watching Malkovich in Burn After Reading ."

Malkovich and Miller have collaborated numerous times.

At the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, in July 2011, Miller was acknowledged with a Saatchi & Saatchi best new director award for his short video, Butterflies, which also featured Malkovich.

On the Catherine Edelman Gallery's website, Miller states : "John is the most brilliant, prolific person I know. His genius is unparalleled.

"I can suggest a mood or an idea and within moments he literally morphs into the character right in front of my eyes.

"He is so trusting of my work and our process. I'm truly blessed to have him as my friend and collaborator."

  • The exhibition is at the Catherine Edelman Gallery, Chicago, from November 7 to January 31
