May Mahlangu could be heading for the Spanish La Liga in the January transfer window, with Espanyol reportedly interested in signing the Bafana Bafana midfielder.

Mahlangu will be a free agent in January when his contract with Swedish side Goteborg ends and, if he is fit and healthy, will likely be a prized signing on the cheap.

Goteborg admit they have heard of the Espanyol interest, but remain hopeful they can persuade the 25-year-old to stay beyond his current deal.

"I have also heard about some Spanish clubs," Goteborg sporting director Mats Gren told fotbollskanalen.se.

He said nothing had changed since he met Mahlangu's agent, Rob Moore, and put forward a proposal to keep Mahlangu.

Moore has good contacts in Spain, where he now resides, and Espanyol are the second-biggest club in his adopted hometown, Barcelona.

Mahlangu made 22 starts with five substitute appearances and six goals in the Swedish league this year and Goteborg are likely to finish in the top three.
