A British woman has died after undergoing an operation to increase the size of her bottom in Thailand, police said.

Born in Nigeria, Joy Williams, 24, was from Thamesmead, London. Her family were too upset to comment.

The doctor who carried out the surgery, Sompob Sansiri, has been charged with causing her death by negligence. He is accused of carrying out night-time surgery without a licence.

Williams had travelled to Bangkok in Thailand for the £2000 (R35000) buttock augmentation operation.

Police Colonel Chayut Marayard, the investigating officer, said she underwent the operation on October 14, but her wounds became infected.

She was in severe pain and returned to the clinic on Thursday to have the implants removed, but died shortly after the second operation.

"At school she had been bullied over her appearance," said a friend who did not wish to be identified.
