The mistress seldom lands the footballer; Rebecca Loos didn't land up with David Beckham, neither did Imogen Thomas with Ryan Giggs.

But Senzo Meyiwa, who already had two daughters with wife Mandisa Mkhize, was enchanted by Kelly Khumalo and courted her until she gave in. In March, their daughter, Thingo, followed (Khumalo told Real magazine that she did not know Meyiwa was married until five months into their relationship, by which time she was already pregnant).

Meyiwa had moved out of the flat he shared with Mkhize in Buccleuch, northern Johannesburg, and was staying with Khumalo in Mulbarton, in the south of the city.

The love triangle inevitably blew into the open when Mkhize laid a charge of common assault against Khumalo and her sister Zandi, who allegedly beat Meyiwa's wife on the side of a road after they saw her speaking to the star goalkeeper.

He was forced to concede he had played both women. Meyiwa told Sunday World newspaper in October last year that it was all his "fault" and that neither woman had known about the other.

"I approached her [Khumalo] and she asked if I was married. But I wasn't man enough to tell her the truth. As a result, she fell in love with me," he said.

Mkhize had written on Facebook: "U can take sumone else's man, but u can neva look like her or u doubting dat he loves u . lol. Ladies, don't do dat 2 yoself [sic]."

Since then the affair has mirrored the exhausting Rihanna-Chris Brown-Karrueche Tran triangle; the back-and-forth causing whiplash.

It appeared to take its toll on the Bafana Bafana keeper, too. By mid-year he was being blamed for conceding soft goals, prompting Pirates administrator Flody Mbele to say: "It's difficult to say where Senzo is at the moment. I think he has lost a bit of confidence and the technical team is aware of this and trying to come up with ways to help him."

But he turned things around, becoming the star performer of both Bafana and Pirates.

Perhaps that coincided with his rekindled romance with Khumalo.

Last month, she posted a selfie of the pair captioned "Perfect Sunday" and earlier this month, a montage featuring her two kids (she has a son, Christian, with rapper Jub Jub) and Meyiwa, on what looked like a family day out.

Last week, she posted a video of Meyiwa driving and singing along to one of her songs, captioned "Bhakabhaka on #AsineFEVER this has got to be the sweetest thing ever! #My00000000000000001Fan."
