All the winners in this year's Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards have a strong link with finance.

Lifetime Achiever Laurie Dippenaar was one of the three founders of the FirstRand Group. Together with GT Ferreira and Paul Harris he laid the foundations of the company that now has First National Bank, Rand Merchant Bank and Wesbank in its stable.

The winner of the prestigious Business Leader award was Sanlam CEO Johan van Zyl. Van Zyl takes the baton from former FNB CEO Michael Jordaan.

Coronation Fund Managers was crowned top company for the second year running.

Though Coronation's share price did not rise as rapidly as in the preceding decade - increasing by a modest 14% in the past year - it nevertheless did the best among the top 100 listed companies over the past five years, with compound growth of more than 70%.

South Africa's longest-serving finance minister, Trevor Manuel, received a special award for his 20 years of public service and the business environment it created.

The Corporate Social Investment Award went to Telkom.
