"Your days are numbered," Reiger Park residents shouted at the man who appeared in court yesterday accused of the hijacking in which four-year-old Taegrin Morris was dragged to his death.

Thamsanqa Brutus Twala, 39, briefly appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court, on the East Rand, on charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of a firearm.

He was arrested earlier this week in Katlehong.

The hijacking was on July 19 just after 7pm as Taegrin's mother, Chantel, was leaving her mother's house in Reiger Park, Boksburg, with her two children.

She was hijacked at gunpoint while buckling Taegrin into the back seat of her VW Golf GTI.

The seatbelt jammed and the hijackers sped off, ripping Taegrin from his mother's arms and leaving him hanging outside the car.

The car was abandoned a few hours later at the Boksburg lake. Taegrin's body was found nearby.

The case was postponed to next week for a bail application.

As Twala made his way down to the holding cells people wearing white T-shirts bearing Taegrin's face stormed forward and shouted: "No bail, no bail - Ons gaan jou vrek maak (We are going to kill you)."

Jacques Adams, Taegrin's godfather, said the court hearing was "very emotional" but that the family was glad that an arrest had been made.

Family member Roseline Kok said: "It's not just about him [Twala] going to jail; we are fighting for the root of crime to be sorted out. We want the syndicate in Reiger Park to come out."
