Durban's Moses Mabhida stadium is making millions of rands a year, thanks to the support of local residents.

The stadium's deficit has fallen from R34-million in 2012 to R13-million as a result.

Manager Vusi Mazibuko described the R3.1-billion facility as the only "commercially active" 2010 World Cup stadium, with several income streams - from tenants, to the SkyCar, Adventure Walk, Big Swing stadium tours and events .

The city budgeted R110-million to run the stadium last year.

"This is a seven-day operation. The municipality is expecting us not only to maintain it, but to generate income. We generate about R80-million back into the municipal coffers," Mazibuko said.

"Every weekend, families are here with their children," he said.

The R4.5-billion Cape Town stadium does not enjoy any non-event day commercial rights due to the current zoning laws. But the City of Cape Town is reviewing the law, according to Garreth Bloor.

The City of Johannesburg did not respond to enquiries about the financial state of the R3.4-billion Soccer City Stadium.
