As part of this month's Art in Clay Festival, Franschhoek potter David Walters hosted two pop-up dinners in his studio.

Chef Duncan Doherty baked garlic pumpkin and duck confit for 10 hours in Walters' kiln and served the food on the potter's plates and bowls.

Seven Franschhoek galleries are taking part in the festival, each with their own stable of ceramic artists - La Motte and Grande Provence wine estates and, in the village, Ebony, IS Art, Art in the Yard, Kim Donaldson Gallery and Walters at the Ceramics Gallery.

Ceramicist Sarah Walters says: "With functional ceramics you can own a piece of art and use it to make memories. It is not just something to look at. There is nothing better than drinking your tea out of a unique, handmade mug."

  • The festival runs until November 24. Call 021-876-4304 or mail waltware@mweb.co.za
