Interpol is withholding comment on the possible killing of the White Widow during a gunfight between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces.

The UK's Daily Mail yesterday quoted Russia's news agency Regnum as reporting that Samantha Lewthwaite had been shot dead in fierce fighting.

She was allegedly killed by a Russian sniper while apparently fighting for Ukrainian forces near the town of Debaltsevo.

Interpol spokesman Rachel Billington yesterday told The Times that they were aware of the reports.

She said: "It would be inappropriate to comment on what at the moment is speculation."

Western intelligence sources interviewed in the Daily Mail said it was hard to believe that Lewthwaite had turned up in the Ukraine as it was not " an obvious destination for a jihadi".

The intelligence sources believed if she was still alive she would be somewhere in the east Africa region.

Lewthwaite - who has travelled on a false South African passport under the name, Natalie Faye - is wanted for her role in last year's Westgate Mall attack in Kenya, in which 67 people, including a South African, were killed and over 175 wounded in a three-day occupation by al-Shabab.
