It is a numberplate fit for a mayor or perhaps a VIP , and the man who registered "Soweto 1 GP" stands to make a lot of money next week.

On Tuesday, the vanity plate Soweto 1 GP is going on auction at Stephan Welz & Co and is expected to fetch R1-million.

The plate comes with a 1950 Morris Minor. The car is only worth about R80000, and comes with the famous plates.

Also on auction are a number of Rolls-Royce cars, the oldest being 89 years old. There is also a Ford Mustang Shelby that starred in a movie.

Dana Soobiah is the man who owns the unique numberplate, and he has it because of his daughter Cashane, who died five years ago.

He had a dream about her, which inspired him to honour her, by registering the plate that is associated with the township.

"My blood and sweat is in Soweto," said Soobiah, who first visited the township at 19 in 1977.

Three years ago the number- plate "F1 GP" went under the hammer in Cape Town for R1-million.

But that was not the most expensive numberplate.

"The same F1 numberplate in the UK went for £5-million," said Stephan Welz & Co consultant Jack Rosewitz.
