In a bid to include everyone in the age of technology, Cape Town is extending free Wi-Fi throughout the Mother City.

The current phase of Cape Town's digital inclusion project is set to be completed by June , when 61 buildings will be equipped with free Wi-Fi.

Some of the areas included in the project will be Bellville, Kraaifontein, Nyanga, Weltevreden Valley and Atlantis.

Nine buildings will be completed by the end of next month.

A trial period in Khayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain has provided free Wi-Fi to more than 3000 users.

Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille said the project was to ensure that broadband access was available to all the city's residents and "not limited to the central business district" only.

The city will spend R1.3-billion over the next seven years rolling out its project.

Orange Horizons CEO Sebastien Crozier said the project would be rolled out in two phases.

"The first phase of the project will offer free Wi-Fi to anyone making use of an enabled device.

"Users will get a free bundle per day to use as they please. In the second phase of the project, we will offer some paying offers along with free Wi-Fi," he said.
