A man has appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court for an apparent road rage incident that resulted in a schoolteacher being dragged along under a bakkie.

Police said Deon Schoeman, 48, handed himself in yesterday morning. He was released on R5000 bail and will appear in court again in the New Year.

The incident took place in Sandton on Thursday after Suzanne Leyden apparently approached a white bakkie after a bumper bashing. The vehicle sped off, dragging her with it. Leyden is in a serious condition in hospital with head and chest injuries. She was sedated but responding to voices and touch, said a relative.

Police said Schoeman had himself laid a charge related to road rage against Leyden at Sandton police station.
