The three youths arrested in connection with what is being described as Cape Town's latest race attack were yesterday granted bail of R1000.

University of Cape Town student Chad de Matos, 19, and two others - Aaron Mack and Mitchell Turner, both 20 - were arrested on Tuesday and face assault and attempted murder charges for allegedly attacking and hurling racial slurs at Cape Flats mother Delia Adonis last month.

Two more men are expected to hand themselves over to the police.

The urgent bail application by the three men capped a dramatic day in which the police officer who originally investigated Adonis's complaint was arrested in connection with allegations that he handled the case improperly, dropping it without Adonis's consent.

Adonis, 52, is nursing bruised ribs and knees, and has stitches in her face. She said last week that five men attacked her on October 17 outside her workplace in Claremont, Cape Town.
