Justice Malala's column "Time to think of what will follow the ailing ANC" (December 1) refers.

The root of the problem is that politically connected individuals are looting up to R80-billion through tender corruption and mismanagement every year.

This makes people angry, and the ANC encourages its voters to blame opposition parties or apartheid to cover up the theft.

Until we have a strong president who takes the right action, theft and corruption will continue to damage this country.

Malala's column on the future of the ANC is timely in light of the party's reckless and pervasive maladministration resulting in the subversion of the democratic principles on which the country was founded two decades ago.

Having returned to South Africa after an absence of 35 years, I am mortified by the ANC's lack of understanding of the concept of governance that has metastasised into cronyism, incompetence, neglect, ignorance and corruption.

As an anti-apartheid activist in the 1960s, I recognise the ANC's invaluable contribution. However, the ANC has outgrown what little usefulness it has left.

We need new and enlightened leadership.
