An investigation into the escape of convicted serial rapist Lungisani Innocent Mdlolo has been launched, with police probing the involvement of their own.

The internal investigation was ordered after Mdlolo escaped while being led to the cells at Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, in Alberton, on the East Rand, on Monday.

Convicted of murder, rape, armed robbery, housebreaking, and firearm offences, Mdlolo was yesterday still on the run.

Since January, 32 Gauteng police officers have been departmentally charged for negligence linked to the escape of prisoners from custody.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini yesterday said a case of assisting a prisoner to escape had been opened.

"An internal investigation against police officers at the court is being conducted," he said.

Investigators were viewing CCTV footage from the court.

Dlamini said security measures were being increased to prevent more escapes.
