The excitement in soccer thanks to Bafana Bafana's recent success was spoiled by Orlando Pirates supporters who threw missiles at their coach, Vladimir Vermezovic, after Pirates' 1-2 loss to Maritzburg United on Tuesday.

The violence we witnessed at FNB Stadium is a reflection of the violence that dominates in our society.

Good people across sporting codes must speak out against this madness.

It can destroy South African football.

This ugly incident happened during the 16 days of activism against violence aimed at women and children. Violence will always beget violence.

Communities always resort to violence instead of protesting with their votes.

Libraries and schools are burned whenever there are service protests. Mass protests and demonstrations always end with businesses and properties going up in smoke.

In schools, our pupils have become bullies who carry knives and guns.

How do we expect our football stadiums to be different?

I do not deny that Vermezovic blundered when he replaced Kermit Erasmus with Lehlohonolo Majoro, playing a lone striker instead of adding more power upfront, despite trailing 1-2.

The coach is also accused of wanting to be his own man and not taking any advice from anybody.

The Bucs are sixth on the log with 18 points - 12 behind leaders Chiefs - having played 12 matches, won five, drawn three and lost four.
