GOOD FOR NOTHING: Zuma burger is barely defrosted
GOOD FOR NOTHING: Zuma burger is barely defrosted

Bacon, egg, cheese and chilli sauce over a barely defrosted box patty - this is the Zuma Burger at the Zoo Lake Bowling Club.

Known for the cheapest booze in Johannesburg's northern suburbs, the club is famous (locally) for opposing the takeover of its premises by ANC stalwart Saths Cooper, and for spreading the rumour that the Guptas, who live up the road, will be using the property as their personal helipad.

The club clearly has a sense of humour when it comes to naming the dishes on their menu.

Hopefully their clientele do, too, when they eat them. The overwhelming flavour of the Zuma Burger is cold patty, disguised by runny yolk and oxidised chilli gloop. Recyclers will be happy to note the bacon is probably leftovers from the breakfast menu. The chips are good, though, and a green salad on the side was fresh, but do hold the dressing.

Why do they call it the Zuma Burger, I asked the waiter? "Probably because it's so big and so good," he said without a hint of irony.
