Helen Zille, 63, premier of the Western Cape and leader of the DA, lives at Leeuwenhof, the premier's residence in Oranjezicht. "But normally we live in Rosebank: we have ironically nicknamed our house Nkandla Lite."

Home life

Johann and I chose to live in Rosebank because we took a decision, decades ago, never to live in a segregated area. We are in the section of Rosebank just below the university which has always been entirely integrated. My son is living there with some housemates and his Rottweiler, Kaiser.

I am not a good housekeeper, and I spread out to fill the space available with my papers and reading material. Johann and I shared a study and it used to drive him mad.

Down time

I like to unwind by reading good journalism. Once a year we go to Keurbooms River. This year we are going to Churchhaven.

My favourite green spaces are the Baxter Theatre gardens and the forest just below the Bremner building at UCT. When I want fresh flowers I go to the sellers in Rondebosch near the fountain.

Eating out

When I'm in the mood for a special breakfast we go to Delish in Beach Crescent, Hout Bay. It is run by my nephew and they specialise in breakfasts and lunches.

Living well

I love cycling to stay fit.

My favourite spot for sundowners is wherever my husband is.

I go to Radeen Fashions in Elsies River when I'm shopping for clothes.

If I told you where my secret hideaway was, it would no longer be secret. People would find me to complain about the potholes or the street lights that are out.
