Kingston Nkhatha scored to tee up a 2-1 victory against Free State Stars that took Kaizer Chiefs to equalling Orlando Pirates 17-game unbeaten record in an Absa Premiership season.

Nkhatha's goal in the 35th minute and Siyabonga Nkosi's strike 18 minutes later earned Chiefs their historic milestone.

Nkhatha, who was voted man of the match, also set up Nkosi to put Amakhosi 2-0 ahead. Eric Mathoho gifted Stars an own goal six minutes from time.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter gave Nkosi a second start this season in place of Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Nkhatha got up well to a header in the 25th minute to Nkosi's cross but Stars goalkeeper Glenn Verbauwhede made a reflex save.

From Nkosi's corner Tefu Mashamaite's header found the striker, who backheeled from 2m in front of Verbauwhede.

Minutes after the break, it was 2-0. Nkhatha, often booed by fans, turned provider with a sharp, low cross from the right. Nkosi only needed to connect for a 4m- finish.

Anthony Laffor's brace (51st and 63rd minutes) ensured Mamelodi Sundowns moved to second place with a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United last night, reports Khanyiso Tshwaku from Harry Gwala Stadium, Pietermaritzburg.

Though they still trail leaders Chiefs by a 15 points, Sundowns have gone 11 games unbeaten .

Maritzburg had the best chances in the first half, which came in the 36th and 38th minutes when they took advantage of dubious clearances by Sundowns.

Their resistance was finally broken by an 85th strike from Sundowns' reject, Kurt Lentjies.

Mondli Cele missed a 90th-minute sitter to level matters after 'keeper Kennedy Mweene parried a long range shot into his path.

Ajax Cape Town and AmaZulu shared the spoils at Cape Town Stadium. Ayanda Dlamini scored for Usuthu in the 85th minute and Franklin Cale grabbed an equaliser for the Urban Warriors in the 90th.

University of Pretoria punished Polokwane City 5-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, in Polokwane. All the goals were scored in the second half.

Geoffrey Massa (two), Thabo Mnyamane (two) and Atusayi Nyondo (one) scored for AmaTuks, while Cole Alexander netted the home side's only goal.
