Neill Blomkamp doing an alien flick sounds perfect, right?

The Johannesburg-born director whet appetites on Instagram this weekend when he posted concept art for an Alien reboot we all assumed to be a future project.

In several posts there were mock-ups of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley character and Michael Biehn's Corporal Dwayne Hicks character.

But he suggested he had dumped the project. He captioned one of the pictures: "Was working on this. Don't think I am any more. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph."

Blomkamp added on another post that the project "woulda rocked. Was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created".

Is Blomkamp teasing that the project is dead?

The District 9 and Elysium director went on to say: "Maybe I'll go back to it ... love the world".

Chappie, Blomkamp's latest flick, is slated for release in the US on March 6 and in South Africa March 13.

The title character, voiced by local actor Sharlto Copley, is a robot which thinks, feels and behaves like a human.
