Stop looking so fixedly in the rear-view mirror as you drive - watch the road ahead, only occasionally glancing intoa mirror to see what is lurking just behind or alongside.

Speaking at the ANC's 103rd anniversary celebration in Cape Town on Saturday, President Jacob Zuma blamed apartheid for the troubles we have today.

Zuma is correct in telling us that the past continues to have an effect on our lives .

But he is a bad driver and will soon steer South Africa into a ditch.

Mr President, we will never deny our horrible past and we will never close our eyes to the legacy left by those who denied the majority a right to be free citizens in their homeland.

Those who say that you should stop blaming the past for our present misfortunes do so in the knowledge that the road ahead needs all our attention.

The tendency to evoke the ghost of the past tells us that you and your cabinet are finding it difficult to navigate the road ahead.

Continuing to tell us about apartheid also makes us aware of how few solutions you and your team have come up with.

Mr President, we need you to tell us what plans you have on the table. We need to hear what steps the administration is taking to deal with the challenges of 2015.

Today Eskom says we must expect load- shedding.

Yes, apartheid planners did construct the electricity grid to serve the privileged minority but, after 20 years in power, you have had plenty of time to plan and execute a solution . What, exactly have you and your team done about the electricity supply situation since coming to power?

Those who voted for your party did so with the understanding that the ANC would lead, not be mesmerised by the images in the rear-view mirror.

It's time to look at the road ahead and steer South Africa to a safe and prosperous future.
